TRVA Announces Friend of the Valley Award Recipient for 2009

U.S. Congressman Zach Wamp to receive TRVA-TCWC

2009 ‘Janice L. Jones’ Friend of the Valley Award

The Tennessee River Valley Association announced on October 1, 2009 the recipient of their prestigious ‘Janice L. Jones’ Friend of the Valley Award for 2009 would be U.S. Congressman Zach Wamp of Tennessee’s 3rd District.

Formed in 1967, the Tennessee River Valley Association and its Tennessee-Cumberland Waterways Council promotes commercial navigation as a catalyst to economic growth in the Tennessee and Cumberland River Valleys.  The TRVA-TCWC mission is to insure the continued development, improvement and modernization the region’s waterway infrastructure that provides tremendous economic benefits and opportunities to communities throughout the entire region.  The association’s membership consists of towing companies, barge lines, port & terminal operators, related businesses and industries, municipalities, and concerned citizens from across the southeastern United States.

Named for Jan Jones who led the non-profit organization for three decades, the Friend of the Valley Award is presented annually to individuals who make substantial contributions to the economic improvement of the Tennessee and Cumberland Valley regions.

Congressman Wamp’s persistent effort on behalf of the replacement of the deteriorating Chickamauga Lock near Chattanooga is an example of his commitment to the region’s waterway transportation infrastructure. Keeping the aging Chickamauga Lock open and operational as a major thoroughfare for commerce in the South continues to be a top priority for Zach, who has fought for the necessary funding for repairs and resources for the planning and construction of the replacement lock.

U.S. Congressman Zach Wamp’s service on behalf of the residents of the Tennessee and Cumberland Valleys has earned him deserving recognition from this multi state public-interest organization. The formal presentation of the 2009 ‘Janice L. Jones’ Friend of the Valley Award will be held during the Tennessee River Valley Association’s 43rd Annual Meeting on October 20, 2009 in Gatlinburg, TN.
